Carlos Vera

My work draws from people’s moods and gestures, especially growing up in Boyle Heights in the 1950s and 1960s, which provided many rich and whimsical sounds and images.

I constantly destroy the human body with line and color until they conform to a single image or group of images. Many of the odd shapes in my work manifest themselves from places I’ve not yet discovered, so over time I add layer by layer, adding and subtracting, into a final composition of color and line. Meanwhile, I never take myself too seriously.

I attended the Chouinard Art Institute and Art Center School of Design in the 1960s. Since then I have worked in entertainment advertising as a designer, art director, illustrator and sketch artist.
